The IN CONVERSATION series portrays prominent innovation scholars of the day in the form of intellectual-biographical interviews with other senior scholars.

In the EIGHTH event KEUN LEE will be interviewed by KJ JOSEPH (on 24 AUG, 2022) at 12 NOON GMT | 1 pm - London

Structure of the program (2 hours split up as follows)

Brief intro to the program and introducing KJ Joseph (by the anchor) 5 minutes

i. Introductory remarks by KJ and Keun Lee is introduced (10 minutes) followed by a conversation between them as follows

ii. Formative years and major influences - (10 minutes)

iii. Contributions, Critique and weakness, Current work & future course - (35 minutes): starting from the important contributions of Lee, evolving towards a critical evaluation of his work. Then moving on to discussions on what next given the changing circumstances, how the theoretical contributions are relevant in current circumstances etc. It is a platform to convey what they want future generations to take from Lee and how they can further develop standing on the strong base that was created.

iv. Comment on Status of Innovation Economics and what next? - (10 minutes)

Some of the possible questions could be the following. However the speakers can shape it the way they want it to be!

  • How did you end up doing research on innovation?
  • What were your most important contributions to the field?
  • To what degree have you engaged in teamwork and collective research?
  • How do you see the relationship between economics and innovation studies?
  • How do you see the role of innovation policy and innovation politics in development strategies?
  • How do you see the future for innovation studies?
  • At what level should we study innovation – micro, meso and macro?
  • What kind of methods should we use to study innovation and economic development?
  • What kind of advice would you like to give to young innovation scholars?
  • What role can innovation play in meeting global challenges?

v. Discussion (1 hour): For the 1 hour discussion a panel of scholars [John Mathew, Patarapong Intarakumnerd

& Chaisung Lim will ask questions or make comments on Lee's work. After Lee's response to them the forum will be open for questions from the general audience.

Brief Biodata of the speakers

KEUN LEE

Keun Lee is Distinguished Professor of Seoul National University (economics), and Head of the Center for Comparative Economic Studies. He is a Fellow of the CIFAR (Canada), and founding director of the Center for Economic Catch-up (now chairmen of the board). He is the winner of the 2014 Schumpeter Prize for his monograph on Schumpeterian Analysis of Economic Catch-up (2013 Cambridge Univ. Press). He is also an editor of Research Policy. 

In 2021, He served as the Vice-chairman of the National Economic Advisory Council, which is a key advisory body for the President of Korea (Chairman of the Council). He is also a regular writer for Project Syndicate. He served as the President of the International Schumpeter Society (2016-18), a member of the Committee for Development Policy of UN (2013-18), a GFC member of the World Economic Forum (2016-19). He obtained Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. His total citations received is about 12,000 with H-index of 49 (Google Scholar). He has a new book, China’s Technological Leapfrogging and Economic Catch-up, from Oxford Univ. Press (2021).

KJ JOSEPH

Prof K. Earlier positions that he held include Ministry of Commerce Chair Professor at Centre for Development Studies, Visiting Senior Fellow at RIS, New Delhi, Professor Jawaharlal Nehru University, IT Policy Consultant of UNESCAP for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and the Yunnan Province of China, Expert in Innovation studies at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, China, selected under the program of search for global experts. He has also been a consultant to UNCTAD.

Gold Medalist of the Calicut University for MA Economics, he earned M Phil and Ph D Degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University (Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum) and undertook post doctoral research at Yale University as a Ford Foundation Fellow.

His areas of expertise include science technology and innovation for development with focus on information technology, industry studies especially electronics; FDI, trade, globalization and WTO, regional development with focus on Kerala economy and natural resource based development with focus on plantation agriculture.

 Apart from over 80 research papers and a number of policy-oriented reports, he has six books published by five leading international publishers (Sage publications, Oxford University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge and Edward Elgar) to his credit. He has delivered invited lectures, keynote addresses and presented papers in over 80 seminars/conferences held in 35 countries and over 125 seminars/workshops/conference in India.

He has been a member of the Committee of Direction and Governing Body of CDS, Steering Committee of India-EU Cooperation in S&T, Review Committee of HSRC South Africa, Indo-Japan Committee of Social Sciences and Humanities, and different expert committees appointed by the Government of India and Government of Kerala, including the Co-Chairman of 13th Five Year  Plan Working Group on Micro, Small and Traditional industries, Kerala State Planning Board. 

He serves as the editorial board member of International Journal of Technological Learning, Innovation and development, Inter-science Publishers; Institutions and Economies; African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development , Routledge, Taylor & Francis; Millennial Asia, Sage Publications.

JOHN MATHEW

John Mathews is Professor Emeritus at Macquarie University, Sydney, in the faculty of Business and Economics. For the past 20 years he was a Professor of Strategy at Macquarie Graduate School of Management, retiring from active teaching in 2018. From 2009 to 2012 he held concurrently the Eni Chair of Competitive Dynamics and Global Strategy at LUISS Gardo Carli University in Rome. For the past several years Professor Mathews has focused on the greening of industry with an emphasis on the role of China. The year 2017 saw publication of Global Green Shift by Anthem Press in London (http://www.anthempress.com/global-green-shift-pb), with a web page created for the book: www.globalgreenshift.org. In July 2018 Professor Mathews was awarded the biannual Schumpeter Prize in recognition of his work and most recent book. 

PATARAPONG Intarakumnerd

Patarapong Intarakumnerd is a full professor at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo. His research interests include innovation systems in newly-industrialising countries in Asia, industrial clusters, technological capabilities of latecomer firms, innovation financing, and roles of public research instiutes and universities. He is an editor-in-chief of SSCI-indexed Asian Journal of Technology Innovation, and a member of international editorial boards of several international journals related to innovation management and policies.  He has worked as an advisor/consultant for the World Bank, UNESCO, UNCTAD, OECD, JICA, Asian Productivity Organisation (APO), German Development Institute, International Development Research Center of Canada (IDRC), Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). 

CHAISUNG LIM

Technology innovation management professor with 22 years of teaching, after working for Korea's 

premier economic research institute for 10 years. Research work has been focused on technological 

catch-up & innovation management by emerging firms. Founded Korea Industry 4.0 Association in 2015 

and became a member of the Boston-based Industrial Internet Consortium with active collaboration 

with peers on test beds and business-related subjects, such as Digital Transformation.

SWATI MEHTA

Swati Mehta is PhD. (Economics) Assistant Professor, Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar (Punjab). She was Visiting Researcher (Mar-Aug’ 2019) at Intitute of Economic Research, Seoul National Univerity, Seoul, S. Korea. Area of research includes Innovation Systems, Global value chains, Economic Devlopment, Manufacturing Industries in developing economies. Member- Globelics.
