The IN CONVERSATION series portrays prominent innovation scholars of the day in the form of intellectual-biographical interviews with other senior scholars.

Structure of the program (2 hours split up as follows)

Brief intro to the program and introducing VALERIA ARZA (by the anchor) 5 minutes

i. Introductory remarks by VALERIA and JORGE is introduced (10 minutes) followed by a conversation between them as follows

ii. Formative years and major influences - (10 minutes)

iii. Contributions, Critique and weakness, Current work & future course - (35 minutes): starting from the important contributions of JORGE, evolving towards a critical evaluation of his work. Then moving on to discussions on what next given the changing circumstances, how the theoretical contributions are relevant in current circumstances etc. It is a platform to convey what they want future generations to take from JORGE and how they can further develop standing on the strong base that was created.

iv. Comment on Status of Innovation Economics and what next? - (10 minutes)

Some of the possible questions could be the following. However the speakers can shape it the way they want it to be!

v. Discussion (1 hour): For the 1 hour discussion a panel of scholars [CARLOTA PEREZ, JOSE MIGUEL NATERA & CARMEN CONTRERAS] will ask questions or make comments on JORGE's work. After JORGE's response to them the forum will be open for questions from the general audience.

Brief Biodata of the speakers

JORGE KATZ

Jorge Katz was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1940.  He received a First Degree in Economics at the University of Buenos Aires and completed his Doctorate at Balliol College, Oxford in 1967 with a dissertation entitled "Production Functions, Foreign Investment and Growth" which was published by North Holland Publishing Company in 1969.  He has been Professor on Industrial Economics at the University of Buenos Aires during the period 1968-1992. He also teaches a Graduate Course on Technology and Innovation at the University of Chile.  He has published extensively both on the subject of Technology and Industrial Restructuring in Latin America and also on Issues related to the Structure and Behavior on the Health Sector.

VALERIA ARZA

Valeria Arza is a principal researcher at CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council - Argentina) with a workplace at CENIT (Research Center for Transformation), National University of San Martin. Valeria has an honours degree in Economics (Buenos Aires University) a Master in Development (London School of Economics) and a PhD in Studies of Science and Technology Policy (SPRU, Sussex University). In 2021 she won the Houssay prize in the Social Sciences, which is the highest award granted in the national scientific system. My research agenda is in the area of science, technology and innovation policies studies and her current projects are on open and citizen science for societal goals (see STRINGS and CoAct).

CARLOTA PEREZ

British-Venezuelan researcher, lecturer and international consultant, Carlota Perez studies the mutual shaping of technical change and society and the lessons provided by the history of technological revolutions for economic growth and development. In Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital: The Dynamics of Bubbles and Golden Ages (Elgar 2002), she put forward her theory of the emergence and diffusion of technological revolutions and of the role of finance in the process. Her work has contributed to the present understanding of the relationship between technology, innovation and economic development; between technical and institutional change; and between finance and technological diffusion. She is currently working on a sequel, Beyond the Technological Revolution, funded by Anthemis UK, which will analyse the roles that government, business and civil society play in the deployment of the potential of each revolution. She is Honorary Professor at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) at University College London, UK and at SPRU, the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, UK; Adjunct Professor of Technology and Socio-Economic Development at the Ragnar Nurkse School of Innovation and Governance at TalTech, Estonia. http://www.carlotaperez.org/about

JOSE MIGUE L NATERA

CONACYT Professor – Autonomous Metropolitan University-Xochimilco Unit. Doctor (2014, European Mention) and Master (2010) in "Economics and Innovation Management" from the Complutense University of Madrid. Coordinator of the Office of the Latin American Network for the study of Learning, Innovation and Skills Construction Systems (LALICS) and member of the Coordinating Team of the Latin American Network of CTI Postgraduate Studies RedPos+CTI. His main interest is the use of knowledge as a development tool with a systemic vision and the application of quantitative methods. Research lines: innovation systems and economic development; relationship between science, technology and innovation in the area of ​​health; and STI policies oriented towards attention to national problems. He has worked on consulting projects for Spanish, Mexican, Ibero-American and Inter-American organizations generating information on the economic impacts of science, technology and innovation on social welfare.

CARMEN CONTRERAS

VERONICA ROBERT

fellow researcher at National Council of Technical and Scientific Research (CONICET) and at National University of San Martin (UNSAM), in Argentina. She obtained her Doctoral Degree at Buenos Aires University. Her thesis was awarded the Raúl Prebicsh national prize given oy by the Central Bank of Rep. Argentina. The main topic of her research is the relation between innovation, development and structural change.

Verónica Robert heads the Research Office of the Institute of Advance Studies in Social Science at UNSAM, and she is the Director of the Centre for Studies on Economics and Development at IDEAS-UNSAM. She has led five research projects and has participated in more than 20. She also has been a consultant for ECLAC, ILO and WB.

Since 2005, she has published more than 50 publications as books, journal articles, and book chapters
