LECTURE-8: APPLICATION OF NATIONAL SYSTEMS OF INNOVATION

The lecture covers the following:

-NSI as an ‘Analytical Focusing Device, with strong theoretical foundations’

-NSI as national policy tool

-Case studies of a few National Systems of Innovation

-Practical lessons learnt from transition of countries (like Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea) from developing to upper income strata

-Small country innovation system.

The chair:

Mammo Muchie is DST-NRF SARChI Chair in Innovation Studies, He did his undergraduate degree in Columbia University, New York, USA and his postgraduate MPhil and DPhil in Science, Technology, and Innovation for Development (STI&D) from the University of Sussex, UK. He is currently a DST-NRF research chair in Innovation Studies at the Faculty of Management Sciences, Tshwane University of Technology and a C rated research Professor.

​He is a fellow of the South African Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences and the African Science Institute. He is also currently adjunct Professor at the Adama Science, Technology University, Arsi University, Addis Ababa University and University of Gondar, Ethiopia.​He has been senior research associate at the SPMTDC programme and also has become Senior Research Associate at the TMD Centre of Oxford University. He is also a Chief Editor of a new TUT Journal of Creativity, Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (JCISE).

Prof Muchie is collaborating with researchers (DILIC) on the potential research areas of Africa-China industrial high-technology sectors. He has been invited as Associate Faculty professor at Sussex University, UK for the next three years; at the University of Economics in Prague as visiting professor, Jawarahal Nehru University in India, Tonji and Shanghai University in China; Honorary Professor Jiaxing University in China, Assistant Professor Amsterdam University, Visiting Professor Carleton College in the USA; Principal Lecturer Middlesex University, Professor Aalborg University; Part–time Lecturer, Cambridge University; Honorary Professor UNISA. Professor Mammo held various positions globally, including the Director of the Research Programme on Civil Society and African Integration at the then University of Kwa Zulu-Natal; board member at the North Western University, Chengdu, China.

Speakers:

Dr Hon-Ngen Fung (Kenneth) is a Lecturer attached to the Postgraduate and Research Centre at UOW Malaysia KDU University College, a member of the University of Wollongong Global Network. He holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Malaya, a Master of Communication (Science Communication) from the University of Queensland, and a BSc (Medical Bioscience) from Monash University. His research interest includes Scientometrics; Innovation Systems; Science, Technology and Innovation Policy and Management; Science Communication, and Science, Technology and Society. He has published in Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Scientometrics, Asian Journal of Technology and Innovation, and Seoul Journal of Economics. Apart from that, he has also participated in consultancy projects such as the National Bibliometric Study 2015 by the Malaysian Science and Technology Information Centre. Kenneth is currently conducting a Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) project on “Feasibility of Smart Agriculture in ASEAN: Investigating Social Dimensions and Policy Mechanisms to Enhance Technology Adoption and Upgrading in the Rice Sector”. He is also embarking on other research projects to do with the adoption of smart home appliances among home buyers as well as the role of makerspaces in sparking inventiveness in the community.
