Liverpool are looking to respond to Manchester City’s win over Brentford with a victory of their own against Luton tonight.
Jurgen Klopp’s side take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final this weekend, looking to pick up the first of what could four trophies in the German’s final season in charge, but their full focus for now will be on the Hatters.
Victory over Brentford last time out continued a fine run and, with City drawing with Chelsea later in the run, it is Liverpool who have the title race in their hands.
Luton impressed despite being beaten by Manchester United on Sunday and still have every chance of staying up in their first season back in the top-flight.
Here’s what you need to know:
What: Premier League
Who: Liverpool vs. Luton Town
When: Wednesday, February 21, 2024
Time: 2:30 p.m. ET
Where: Anfield, Liverpool, England
TV: USA Network, NBC Universo
Diogo Jota is facing months out of action with a knee injury, while Curtis Jones and Alisson Becker will also miss the game. Darwin Nunez is also a doubt.
A knee injury continues to keep Trent Alexander-Arnold on the sidelines and he will miss the Carabao Cup final. Mohamed Salah could start against Luton to further build his match fitness, having come off the bench last time out on his return from a hamstring issue.
Elijah Adebayo is a major doubt for Luton, having missed the defeat to Manchester United after picking up a hamstring injury in the warm-up. Marvelous Nakamba and Mads Andersen remain out, while Daiki Hashioka is yet to make his debut for the club.
This match marks exactly a year since Liverpool were beaten on home soil, with Real Madrid picking up a 5-2 win in the Champions League.
The Reds have been rock solid everywhere this season but particularly at home - only Manchester United and Arsenal have avoided defeat at Anfield this term. Another comfortable night appears to be on the cards for Klopp and his players, even if Luton have enjoyed some success against the big teams.
Liverpool hopes they can easily get by the Hatters on Wednesday, in preparation for their Carabao Cup Final matchup with Chelsea on Sunday. The Reds have been on a solid run lately. Despite giving up points in a loss to Arsenal earlier in the month, Liverpool has gone unbeaten in 13 of their last 14 matches across all competitions, including a win over Chelsea on Jan. 31. Their last two wins have been nothing to boast about, as they beat up Burnley and Brentford in their last two league matches.
They come into Wednesday sitting two points up on Arsenal, with Manchester City right in the thick of things as well.
Luton Town is scrapping to keep themselves in the top division. Even though showed some signs of immature play in their first EPL season in nearly 30 years, but have played well enough to stay out of the bottom three. However, a three-match winless skid, including losses to Sheffield United and Manchester United, the Hatters are currently in the first relegation spot, tied with Everton at 20 points apiece.
This is definitely a tough stretch for Luton Town. After their meeting with Liverpool, they host Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup next Tuesday, before taking on Aston Villa on March 2.
Liverpool is 18-14-7 against Luton Town, with the Hatters stealing a point at home back in early November.
Liverpool’s last game was a 4-1 victory away from home over Brentford FC, taking 16 shots and outshooting Brentford by three. Liverpool got goals from four players, including Darwin Nunez, in its game versus Brentford.
Luton Town lost at home 2-1 to Manchester United in its most recent game on February 18. Luton Town outshot Manchester United 22 to 20. Carlton Morris recorded his team’s only goal in the match.
Victory on the road at Brentford came at a cost for Klopp with Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota joining a growing injury list after being forced off in the first half. Key defender Trent Alexander-Arnold remains out of action and Klopp will make a late check on Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez with the latter also replaced at Brentford.
The Reds were initially set to play the Hatters on Saturday, but Jurgen Klopp's involvement in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday led to the league tie being rearranged.
Having last picked up a 4-1 win over Brentford at the weekend, the current league leaders will also have the onus of extending their lead, with Arsenal and Manchester City not far behind. On the other hand, Luton continue fighting the drop after suffering back-to-back defeats against Sheffield United and Manchester United.
Klopp has been dealt with injury blows to both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota in the Brentford win, while Darwin Nunez may be rested in lieu of Sunday's final.
At the same time, Mohamed Salah marked his comeback the last time out and could also earn his first start since the 4-2 victory against Newcastle United on New Year's Day, after the Egyptian scored off the bench at the Gtech Community Stadium last weekend.
Among the others to miss out through injuries, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold all cram the Liverpool treatment room.
Meanwhile, Luton boss Rob Edwards lost his top scorer Elijah Adebayo to a hamstring injury during the warm-up ahead of last Sunday's home loss against United.
Mads Andersen, Marvelous Nakamba and captain Tom Lockyer are also nursing their respective knocks, while January signing Daiki Hashioka may not be ready for a start.
Last time out, Liverpool earned a 4-1 win away from home against Brentford FC, taking 16 shots and outshooting Brentford by three. Darwin Nunez was one of four Liverpool goal-scorers in the game against Brentford.
Luton Town suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United in its last game on February 18, outshooting Manchester United 22 to 20. Carlton Morris scored Luton Town’s only goal on four shots.
